I started Top Icons in 2000 to share my own icons with the world. It started as a hobby and of course, free.

In a short time we had a lot of traffic and began to make money with the banners and the advertisment in our site.

But about one year ago, the banners income went to almost nothing and the cost of the hosting became great.
Since our site has a lot of visitors, it creates a great data transfer each month and we must pay our hosting server according to that.
It's VERY expensive for us and we have no way to afford it, so we had only two choices: Closing the site or creating a Members Area.

I think that $25 is not a lot of money for a full year of high quallity original icons and it's our last chance. If we can't get enough members we'll have to close the site.

A lot of icons sites are doing the same for the same reason, and I think it'll be usual in the future since it's dificult and expensive to run a site like this and create original icons for free.

So that's why we started charging... I wish I could share our icons for free but it isn't free for us either, so we had no choice. If you have another idea please let me know.
